Couples Therapy in Tysons, VA

Create a relationship that feels more connected, understood, and like a team again.

Love begins as a feeling. To endure, it must evolve into choice and action.

Couples therapy can be helpful whether your relationship feels stuck in a difficult pattern or you simply want to strengthen what is already working. Every relationship goes through periods of stress, disconnection, or conflict, and therapy can help you better understand those patterns, communicate more effectively, and reconnect with each other.

Is couples therapy the next step for you?

Couples therapy may be a good next step if you and your partner:

  • Keep getting pulled into the same conflicts without feeling like anything gets resolved

  • Want to communicate more clearly and feel more connected

  • Have busy schedules that leave little time or energy for your relationship

  • Find that small disagreements quickly turn into bigger arguments

  • Struggle with shutting down, becoming defensive, or escalating during conflict

  • Feel more like roommates than romantic partners

  • Want to improve intimacy, affection, or your sex life

  • Are working through hurt, betrayal, or a loss of trust

  • Need support having difficult conversations about sex, money, health, family, boundaries, or the future

  • Are facing a major decision, transition, or change together

Couples therapy with us is active and collaborative. We do more than simply listen and reflect. Your therapist may offer practical tools, share observations when helpful, and ask thoughtful questions that help both partners better understand their patterns and consider new ways of responding to each other.

We also understand that starting couples therapy can feel vulnerable or anxiety-provoking. Our goal is to create a respectful, balanced environment where both partners have space to speak openly, feel heard, and work through difficult conversations without the session becoming another place to argue.

We welcome couples of all ages, genders, identities, relationship structures, and belief systems. Fairfax Therapy Group is proudly LGBTQIA+ affirming, and we especially welcome queer and 2SLGBTQIA+ couples seeking a therapist who understands and respects their relationships.

What to Expect

Your first few sessions are focused on helping your therapist understand your relationship, what has been difficult, and what you both hope will change.

We typically begin with a comprehensive relationship assessment so your therapist can better understand your communication patterns, strengths, stressors, and areas of conflict. From there, you and your therapist will develop clear goals and a treatment plan tailored to your relationship.

Comprehensive Relationship Assessment

  • Initial Couples Session
Meet together to discuss what brought you to therapy, identify current concerns, and begin understanding the patterns affecting your relationship.

  • Individual Sessions, When Helpful
Your therapist may meet briefly with each partner individually to better understand personal experiences, relationship history, and perspectives that may be influencing the relationship.

  • Feedback & Treatment Planning
Your therapist will share observations about your relationship’s strengths and challenges and work with you to identify goals and priorities for therapy.

Customized Relationship Interventions

  • Building Understanding & Empathy
Learn to better understand the emotions, needs, and experiences underneath each partner’s reactions so conflict feels less personal and more manageable.

  • Communication Skill-Building
Practice expressing needs, feelings, and concerns more clearly while learning how to listen and respond without immediately becoming defensive, withdrawing, or escalating.

  • Conflict Management & Repair
Identify recurring conflict patterns, slow down difficult interactions, and develop healthier ways to repair after disagreements.

  • Strengthening Connection
Rebuild emotional closeness, friendship, affection, intimacy, and the sense that you are working together rather than against each other.

  • Creating Shared Meaning
Clarify the values, goals, traditions, and priorities that matter to your relationship and strengthen your sense of partnership moving forward.
